From Engineer to Financial Coach: My Journey to Living Beyond Line of Sight

By Robert Morgan, Founder of Living Beyond Line of Sight

Life has a way of charting courses we never anticipated. If you had told me decades ago that I'd be a financial coach helping others navigate their way to financial freedom, I might've chuckled and pointed back to my spreadsheets. Yet, here I am, and I've never felt more aligned with my purpose. This is the story of how I am transitioning from an engineer entrenched in data and systems to a guide helping others see beyond their immediate financial horizons.

A Dual Life of Numbers and Nurturing

By day, I'm the Director of Systems Engineering at a Fortune 500 company serving the Department of Defense. I lead a team of nearly one hundred brilliant engineers, steering projects that push the boundaries of technology. With a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, my world has long revolved around RF Engineering, Satellite Communications and Battle Management Systems. Over 35 years, this path has taken me around the globe, collaborating with incredible minds and tackling challenges that once seemed insurmountable.

At home, I'm a husband of over 33 years to an amazing woman who's shaping young minds as a school teacher. Together, we're proud parents to three adult children who, despite their age, still find amusement in their dad's "nerdy" tendencies. (Yes, I confess—Excel might just be my first language, and they've got plenty of stories to back that up!) Our faith is a cornerstone of our lives, and we're active members of North River Church in Parrish, Florida.

The Subtle Descent into Financial Fog

Growing up, money was often seen as a symbol of success—a tangible measure of keeping up with societal expectations. When my wife and I started our journey together, we unwittingly stepped onto a treadmill known as "lifestyle creep." With each raise and bonus, our spending dutifully kept pace. We bought the bigger house, the newer cars, indulged in the latest gadgets—all the trappings of a life well-lived, or so we thought.

But beneath the surface, cracks began to appear. We were earning a solid middle/high-class income, yet living paycheck to paycheck. The numbers didn't add up, at least not in a way that made sense for long-term stability. Our consumer debt ballooned past $100,000, with non-mortgage minimum payments swallowing nearly $4,000 each month. The weight of financial stress was becoming unbearable, casting long shadows over what should have been joyous moments.

A Turning Point Guided by Faith

In the midst of our financial turmoil, a beacon of hope emerged from an unexpected place—our church. They were hosting Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University, and it felt like divine timing. Skeptical yet desperate for change, we enrolled, hoping to find a lifeline.

The experience was nothing short of transformative. Concepts that once seemed daunting were broken down into actionable steps. We learned to communicate openly about our finances, set realistic budgets, and most importantly, align our spending with our values and long-term goals.

Climbing Out and Looking Ahead

Fast forward to today, and the contrast is stark. We've eliminated all our debt except for our home, and even that is on track to be paid off within the next three years—a full ten years ahead of our 15-year mortgage schedule. The relief and empowerment that come from shedding the chains of debt are profound. It's not just about the numbers in a bank account; it's about the freedom to make choices unburdened by financial fear.

I share this not to boast, but to illuminate what's possible. If someone as entrenched in old habits as we were can make this shift, so can others. The journey required honesty, discipline, and a willingness to embrace discomfort, but every step moved us closer to a life where we controlled our money, not the other way around.

Answering a New Calling

Emerging from our own financial overhaul, I couldn't shake the realization that many in our community were quietly wrestling with similar struggles. The façade of prosperity often hides anxiety, stress, and a feeling of helplessness. I felt a stirring—a call to extend a hand to those seeking a way out.

This led me to enroll in the Financial Coach Master Training program through Ramsey Solutions. Combining my analytical skills from engineering with a passion for helping others, I founded Living Beyond Line of Sight. The name reflects a belief that with the right guidance, anyone can navigate beyond their immediate challenges and towards a horizon brimming with possibilities.

Bridging the Gap Between Knowledge and Action

What sets my coaching apart is an understanding that financial peace isn't just about spreadsheets and budgets (though you can bet we'll use them!). It's about mindset shifts, redefining relationships with money, and building habits that sustain wealth in all its forms.

My engineering background instills a methodical approach to problem-solving, but coaching allows for a human connection that data alone can't achieve. It's incredibly rewarding to witness clients experience their own "aha" moments—to see them regain control and confidence.

An Invitation to Your Own Journey

If any part of my story resonates with you, I encourage you to take that first step. Whether you're drowning in debt, eager to optimize your finances, or somewhere in between, there's a path forward. I've been where you are, and I understand the mix of fear and hope that comes with contemplating change.

At Living Beyond Line of Sight, I've developed a customized coaching program designed to meet you where you are. It's not about a one-size-fits-all solution but crafting strategies that align with your unique circumstances and aspirations.
